Alabama Paycheck Calculator (2026)

Alabama uses a three-bracket progressive income tax (2% on the first chunk of taxable income, 4% in the middle, and 5% at the top), plus the standard $3,000 deduction that reduces your taxable base. Depending on where you work, some cities and counties also levy an occupational tax directly on wages.

How Alabama withholding works

How Alabama's progressive brackets work

Alabama's income tax runs from 2% on the first taxable dollars up to 5% on the amount above each bracket threshold. The $3,000 standard deduction (single filer) comes off before the rate applies, so your effective rate on total gross pay is lower than the 5% top rate. Only the portion of income inside each band is taxed at that band's rate.

Local occupational taxes in Alabama

Several Alabama cities and counties impose their own occupational tax, a flat percentage on wages earned inside the jurisdiction. Birmingham, for example, has historically levied a local payroll tax. If you work in one of those localities, that amount is withheld on top of state income tax. Check with your employer's payroll department to confirm whether a local occupational tax applies to your worksite.
