Maryland Paycheck Calculator (2026)

Maryland is one of the few states where local income taxes are universal. Every county and Baltimore City adds its own income tax on top of the state rate, ranging from roughly 2.25% to 3.20% of taxable income. Combined with Maryland's progressive state rate of 2%–6.50% and a $3,350 standard deduction, your total state-plus-local income tax rate can approach 10% for higher earners.

How Maryland withholding works

Maryland state income tax: 2% to 6.50%

Maryland's progressive schedule runs from 2% on the bottom tranche up to 6.50% on the highest incomes, after a $3,350 standard deduction for single filers. The brackets are relatively narrow, meaning many middle-income earners climb into higher bands. Only income inside each bracket pays that bracket's rate.

Maryland county income taxes, withheld by your employer

Every Maryland county and Baltimore City levies a local income tax ranging from 2.25% to 3.20%. This is withheld alongside state income tax by your employer based on your county of residence. A Montgomery County resident, for example, pays a combined state-plus-county rate that can exceed 9% on higher income. The county tax is applied to the same taxable income base as the state tax.
