Louisiana restructured its income tax in 2025, moving from a three-bracket progressive system to a single flat rate of 3.00%. The new $12,875 standard deduction, much larger than under the old system, shields a significant portion of wages before the flat rate applies.

How Louisiana withholding works
Louisiana's switch to a flat 3.00% rate
Under the old system Louisiana had progressive brackets reaching 4.25%. The 2025 overhaul collapsed those brackets into a single 3.00% flat rate starting in 2025 (and continuing through 2026). Combined with the new $12,875 standard deduction (more than triple the old deduction), most Louisiana workers see a lower effective tax rate than before the change.
How the $12,875 deduction changes the math
A $12,875 standard deduction (single filer) means the first $12,875 of wages faces no Louisiana income tax at all. Only income above that threshold is subject to the 3.00% flat rate. Pre-tax retirement and health contributions reduce taxable wages further, which can push a portion of wages below even the deduction threshold.
