How New Jersey withholding works

New Jersey's progressive brackets: 1.40% to 10.75%

NJ's six brackets climb steeply through the middle ranges, reaching 10.75% on the highest income. Because it is marginal, most workers' effective rate is far below their top bracket. New Jersey provides no standard deduction; personal exemptions reduce taxable income instead. The exemption amounts are modest, so a relatively large share of wages flows into the bracket schedule.

Newark payroll tax: employer-side only

Newark imposes a payroll tax on employers for wages paid inside the city. This is an employer obligation, not an employee withholding, so it does not appear as a deduction on your pay stub. If you work in Newark your employer bears that tax cost, but your net pay reflects only state and federal withholding.
