Tennessee has never taxed wage income, and since 2021 it no longer taxes interest and dividends either — the old 'Hall tax' was fully phased out. So a Tennessee paycheck comes down to just federal income tax and FICA. Enter your pay to see your real take-home.

Tennessee and the retired Hall tax

For years Tennessee had no wage tax but did tax investment income through the Hall tax. That tax was lowered each year and eliminated entirely starting in 2021, so today Tennessee taxes neither wages nor interest and dividends. Nothing state-level is withheld from your paycheck.

What Tennessee still withholds

Your paycheck still reflects federal income tax for your bracket, Social Security at 6.2%, and Medicare at 1.45%. There is no state income tax, SDI, or PFML deduction. Pre-tax contributions like a 401(k) or HSA reduce your taxable wages — you can include them above.

Tennessee Paycheck Calculator — common questions

Does Tennessee tax my paycheck?

No state income tax is withheld from a Tennessee paycheck. You only pay federal income tax and FICA (Social Security and Medicare).

Didn't Tennessee tax investment income?

It used to, through the Hall tax on interest and dividends, but that was fully repealed as of 2021. Tennessee now taxes neither wages nor investment income.

How much of my paycheck do I keep in Tennessee?

More than in most states — only federal income tax and FICA come out, with no state tax. The calculator above shows your exact take-home for your salary and filing status.
